RIP Hideki Irabu

Stunning news tonight - former Lotte and Hanshin pitcher Hideki Irabu was found dead at his home in Los Angeles.  He apparently committed suicide.

I had done a retrospective on Irabu a couple of years ago, so I'll just post one more card here, his 1992 BBM card (#230):

Very sad.

I checked Irabu's most recent stats on www.baseball-reference.com. His last Major League Baseball season was 2002 with the Texas Rangers - in 38 games, he had 16 saves and 4 blown saves; 80% is very good. He apparently tried a come-back in 2009 - in 10 starts with the Long Beach Armada of the independent Golden Baseball League, he had a 3.58 ERA, a WHIP of 1.24, and a record of 5 wins, 3 losses. No more baseball after that. On 17 May 2010 he was arrested for DUI.
I agree - it's sad.

Irabu's last baseball game may have been on 29 August 2009 with the semi-pro Kōchi Fighting Dogs team in Japan. In 5 innings pitched, he allowed 5 earned runs and 5 walks, with 3 strikeouts.
